Services Provided
I practice humanistic and integrative psychotherapy. The Humanistic approach respects and accepts the client as a whole person who has the potential to change, heal and grow. My approach is humanistic and integrative embracing person centred, psychodynamic, holistic, cognitive, and gestalt models of counselling. By using a holistic approach, it means that I recognise the importance of the connection between body, mind and spirit. I draw from different therapeutic approaches and use whichever is most suitable for the individual.
Humanistic and Integrative Therapies have many broad and creative approaches to working with clients. Humanistic therapy allows the client to explore their past and present in order to gain insight into repeating patterns of behaviour which might be preventing them from leading satisfying lives. Through this exploration client’s issues such as depression, anxiety loss and fears can be looked at in a non-judgmental and safe environment. The Humanistic approach is based on creating an atmosphere where clients can communicate freely and openly without been judged.
Therapy is confidential. It takes place in a comfortable setting which is private, where you will be treated with respect. As a therapist, I will not offer you advice or tell you what to do, but will facilitate and assist you in trying to work things out for yourself, and in the way you want.
The Session
What can I expect to happen in the initial session?
The initial session provides an opportunity to discuss the issues of concern to the client and to assess how counselling/psychotherapy might be of benefit to them. If a person decides that they want to start therapy with me appropriate, arrangements are made for the client and the therapist to meet once a week. This usually takes place at the same time each week, to enhance the sense of continuity and commitment for the client. Sessions last for one hour. We will also discuss the following;
• The issue of confidentiality
• Cancellation policy
• Fees and method of payment.
Payment is at the end of each session.
• Commitment to the work
• Goals of therapy
• Client’s History
What happens if I do not want to proceed after the initial session?
There is no obligation to proceed after the initial session. The relationship is central in counselling work, therefore the client and therapist must be the right fit for each other for therapy to be successful. It is the choice of the individual whether or not they wish to continue with the counselling process.
If you decide to go ahead I will give you an appointment that is suitable to both of us. There will always be time to discuss this with their counsellor.
How long is the session?
It is one hour.
How long does counselling take?
The length of time counselling takes varies from person to person. Everyone is an individual and each person’s experience is unique so the duration of their counselling cannot be predicted. I believe in adopting an approach that is best suited to the individual, rather than trying to provide a ‘one size fits all approach'. It can vary from a few weeks up to a few months or longer. Most people feel some benefit even after a few sessions.
It is the choice of the individual whether or not they wish to continue with the counselling process. Periodic reviews are offered to mark progress and to look at the future goal of therapy. Ending therapy is discussed and planned in advance.
